Q&A with Dr. Keamy: Sculptra
10/25/2024
LT: Hi, Dr. Keamy. You recently added Sculptra to your lineup of cosmetic treatments. Tell me what prompted you to add Sculptra.
JK: First, I'd clear up any misconceptions that Sculptra is a filler.
LT: Really?? What's the difference? Let's start there and circle back to my original question.
JK: Sounds good. Dermal fillers are a gel form of the hyaluronic acid found naturally in our bodies. Fillers recreate the volume lost due to the inevitable effects of aging and, like youth, don't last forever. Depending on the product, the body's area, and the injection depth, dermal fillers typically last between 6 and 18 months. Sculptra stimulates collagen and elastin production, the proteins abundant in young skin but diminish as we age.
LT: Good info, Dr. Keamy. Let's return to my original query – What prompted you to offer Sculptra? What patients will benefit from Sculptra?
JK: I have patients, particularly in Florida, where it's summer all year round, with fine lines and wrinkles that cannot be fully corrected with fillers or surface treatments, such as Opus or laser. Fillers cannot diminish vertical wrinkling en masse; these wrinkles can only be filled individually, which is impractical for most situations. Topical treatments don't offer the long-term remedy that Sculptra's collagen- and elastinproducing properties deliver.
LT: Are you saying Sculptra bridges the gap between injectables and light or RF-generated therapies?
JK: Yes, to a point. As with all antiaging skincare and cosmetic treatments, no singular product or procedure delivers everything for everyone. Sculptra is another option. It can be used alone or in conjunction with other treatments.
LT: Excellent! Thank you very much!
